What is a static cling?

An opaque or clear static cling is a pliable type of vinyl which can stick to smooth, glossy surfaces without the need for adhesives. It can feature stunning designs ideal for window branding and decorations. This type of temporary advertising is used to increase storefront foot traffic, build a strong brand awareness and invite people to your venue. Opaque and clear static clings are equally used as office, storefront and home decor or as marketing tools and fleet advertising displays.

What is a clear and opaque static cling?

Both are made of the same vinyl material but one is see-through and the other comes in white. Both are able to adhere to glass, metal and other smooth surfaces without the use of adhesives. An opaque static cling is a great way to promote your custom services and products with vibrant colors. Opaque or white static clings have a white background layer which makes the message pop. A clear one gives you the option to see through the parts of the design that don’t contain any color. Both are perfect temporary advertising tools to announce new products, campaigns, specials and discounts. They’re also used as branding, wayfinding and decor solutions.

How does the static cling work?

Clear or opaque clings are made of a special type of non-adhesive vinyl. This extra smooth and pliable vinyl, when pressed to another smooth surface, adheres through a cohesive force similar to suction. As it doesn’t contain any adhesive glues, it’s easy to remove and reposition without leaving any residue. It’s best suited for temporary applications on glass windows and other smooth surfaces. It can be reused as often as you wish.

What are the benefits of an opaque or clear static cling?

  • Static cling has the same durability as adhesive decals
  • Adhesive-free material leaves no residue after removal
  • Works on glossy materials and curved surfaces
  • Great for both exterior and interior use
  • Easy to apply, remove and reposition
  • Clear option allows light in and offers double-sided visibility
  • Opaque option displays vibrant colors for graphics prints
  • Both are UV-printed to ensure fade-resistance

What is the difference between clear window decals and clear static clings?

Both window stickers or decals and static clings offer cost-effective and highly efficient ways to promote your message to your target audience. Both are equally durable materials for indoor and outdoor use. Both are equally sun and fade-resistant, of the same thickness, have long-term durability and an extended lifespan. However, these minor differences will surely help you choose the one that best suits your requirements:

The main distinguishing feature is in the adhesive properties. Clear static clings have no glue base whereas decals do.

If you’re looking for removable and reusable vinyl graphics with non-adhesive backing, we recommend static clings. They leave no residue after removal and can be reused as repositioned as often as you wish.

However, if not applied properly, high winds can blow them away. Clear window decals, on the other hand, can leave a residue after being under direct sun. Residue comes off with soapy water or alcohol. Once removed, you cannot use them any more.

Where to install the clear or opaque static cling?

Clear and opaque static clings can be applied to the outside of the glass surface to brand or decorate windows and beyond. In case there is an issue with vandalism, static clings can also be applied to the inner glass surface. Depending on the opacity of tinted glass, the readability of the opaque clings can vary. We recommend cleaning the surface where the static vinyl is to be positioned. Place the static cling onto the surface and gently wipe it with a cloth for a smooth appearance. For the step-by-step guide, please see our installation section.

How do I maintain static clings?

Static clings come with a special backing tape or release liner. As static clings are reusable, you should keep the application tape for storage. With proper care and storage, the clings can serve their purpose for years to come!
