No Smoking Sign Laws and Compliance
Most no smoking sign requirements come from state and local law, not one federal standard. Federally funded schools and interstate transit are the main exceptions. Make sure to confirm your local requirements before finalizing your design.
Most laws require the words “No Smoking,” the international no-smoking symbol, or both. Some also require a fine amount, exact wording, or a distance from the entrance.
Size and lettering rules aren’t consistent from state to state. If a state doesn’t specify a size, 14" x 10" is a common industry default. A smaller, 10" x 7" size is for more compact signs. Larger areas often use 18" x 24" for high-visibility placement.
