One of the best opportunities you’ll even have for networking and meeting competitors, clients and customers are at a trade show. Of course, the big concern with a trade show is getting yourself to stand out in what is often a crowd of thousands of other people and businesses.

Obviously, the answer is some high-quality custom signage to get people to notice you and to inform them of what you’re about before you even start the conversation. But what kinds of signs should you be using? There are lots of different options to go with, depending on what you’re trying to say with them and what kind of space you have.

Here are some options to start with.

Step and Repeat Banners/Backdrop Banners

These things just scream “trade show.” Available in 8’x8’, 9’x8’, or 10’x8’, step and repeat banners are huge displays that are perfect for displaying a company or product logo, or for crediting sponsors.

Because step and repeat banners are so large, they’re great for backdrops, or on the side of your display. Generally, it’s best to stick to simple, minimalistic designs for these, especially if you’re planning on using it as a backdrop.

A tiled design style or a simple logo in the middle is usually best. You don’t want to overdesign a step and repeat because they’re usually not meant to be a focal point. A large number of people should be able to clearly see everything there is to see from a distance.

Retractable banners/Pop-up displays/X-stand Banners

The biggest plus to pop-up banners is that they set up in literally seconds. You lock the pole into place on the base, then pull up the banner and attach it to the pole. To take it down, you simply detach the banner from the pole, slide it back into the base, and remove the pole. Easy going both ways.

Of course, ease of use isn’t the only reason to go with a pop-up banner. They also feature a high-quality fabric or vinyl display that is as vivid as it is durable. They’re smaller than the step and repeat banners, which means you have a lot more versatility in where you can use them.

Generally, the best place to put a pop-up banner is near the front or entrance area of your booth. Because they’re eye-catching, you can either put your company logo or information on there, or you can use the sign to advertise, especially if you have a limited-time offer or some sort of offer exclusive to the show you’re at. If you want to draw some extra attention, you can attach some dedicated lighting to the sign as well.

X-stand banners are put together a little differently than pop-up banners and take slightly more time to put together. However, they’re just as easy to transport and can be placed in about the same locations. They are also extremely stable, so you don’t have to worry about them being knocked over in heavy traffic.

Feather Flag Banners, Teardrop Banners

It would be fine to have a nice, standing sign like you’d see at a department store for your booth. They look great and are extremely stable.

However, they’re also very heavy, and not built for frequent transportation. Feather flag and teardrop banners, on the other hand, are explicitly built for quick setup and takedown and can be moved repeatedly with no problems at all.

You’ll frequently see these types of flags stuck in the ground with stakes at outdoor events, but they can also come with a flat base for use indoors or on concrete/asphalt. They’re great eye-catchers and can be made up to 18 feet tall to catch attention from all across the trade show floor.
